Cali was DNA tested by UC Davis. The University identified 33 genetic markers for each dog (66 total genes as there is one gene from each parent per marker). Cali's genes will be compared to those of other tested poodles, allowing us to choose the most diverse mates for her (Moshe and Noah are high on the list). Diversity is said to strengthen immune systems, furthering the improvement of health within our own program and our breed. The University's test also includes markers in the Dog Leukocyte Antigen (DLA) class I and II regions, which regulate cellular and antibody immunities and are carefully weighed in our pairings.
In addition to providing Cali's marker numbers, the following paragraphs indicate the frequencies of those markers in tested standard poodles.
1) DLA I Haplotypes (proxy of genes which regulate cellular mediated immunity): 1002 (20.4% frequency in Standards) and 1004 (10.7% frequency in Standards).
2) DLA II Haplotypes (proxy of genes which regulate antibody mediated immunity): 2001 (58% frequency in Standards) and 2002 (10.7% frequency in Standards).
3) 18 out of 33 possible gene pairs are different in Cali's parents.
4) 19 out of 66 of Cali's possible genes have a frequency of less than 20% in Standard Poodles.
Cali's mom, MHR, WR, SR Misty, WC, JH, WCX, SH), dad, MHR, WR, SR Titan, WC, JH, WCX, SH, maternal grandma, paternal grandpa, and paternal grandma are CHIC'd, meaning they have had extensive genetic testing done on them and passed all tests. Her half-sister,Nat'l/Int'l CH SR Bear, CGC, is also CHIC'd.
Cali's mom, Misty, is a very calm, loving, extremely focused and obedient medium-sized girl (23" tall) who has more heart than most large dogs when it comes to a desire to work and please. (She has often carried very large waterfowl that closely match her own size--never stopping until she delivers to hand.) Titan (a larger dog at 26" tall and 70 lbs) not only loves to work, but has a pedigree filled with amazingly beautiful, well-championed dogs. Titan is the dog shown retrieving a duck in the background picture of this page. Cali's parents both achieved their NAHRA Master Hunter Retriever titles the weekend of 3/17-3/18/2012, despite hail, snow and very cold weather. Misty, Cali's mom, also achieved her first AKC Master Hunter pass at PCA Regionals 9/21/2013.
Cali is a love dog who is very attached to me (Lori). She will retrieve anything to return it to me, but unless I go with Richard, she doesn't want to go. She is highly obedient and is skilled enough to retrieve well. Her thicker structure and beauty would have caused us to choose her if we had planned to do so with her litter, but the reality is that she chose me and I couldn't say "no." (We had planned on keeping a pup from a future Misty X Titan litter.) Cali is highly intelligent, and like her mom, wants to please. We could not be happier with her.
Cali was entered in four conformation shows on 3/10-3/11/2012. She earned her International Championship with the highest ratings in the first three shows. Cali won "Best of Breed Bred by Exhibitor" in three shows by three different judges (see certificates below her title link) and one Group Best Bred By Exhibitor where a medal was earned.
Attached is a Conformation Judge's Report and translation below:
Two of Cali's littermates are now certified service dogs and are working in that capacity for their owners. Additionally, a half-brother is also a service dog for his master. Cali would make a great service dog herself (she is very biddable and calm, and highly focused on her master).
